Monstroid?

Monstroid released in 1986

Monstroid was a mechanical "beast" that was released late in the Masters of the Universe toy line for the Evil Horde - 1986. A fellow fan and collector pointed out that there COULD be a connection between the toy and the transformer like characters that appeared in the December 1985 Christmas Special. Is there a connection between toy and toon, or is this just a coincidence?
